Chinese car brands have gone from a curiosity to a common sight on Dubai roads. BYD, Chery, Jetour, Haval, MG, Geely and Changan now sit in plenty of driveways, offering modern tech, strong equipment lists and competitive prices. But owning one comes with a question many drivers struggle to answer: where do I get it serviced properly once I’m outside the dealership?
At Greenway Auto Repairing Garage in Al Qusais, we are one of the few independent garages in Dubai that specialise in Chinese car brands. Here is what we think every owner should know about keeping these cars running well in UAE conditions.
Why Chinese cars need a specialist
Most newer Chinese models are technology-heavy. They use small turbocharged engines, advanced driver-assistance systems, large infotainment screens and, increasingly, hybrid and fully electric drivetrains. That means:
-
- Software matters. Fault codes and calibrations often require brand-specific diagnostic software, not just a generic code reader.
-
- Parts knowledge matters. Fitting the right specification of part, from the right source, avoids repeat repairs.
-
- Experience matters. A mechanic who has seen a model’s common issues will find problems faster than someone encountering it for the first time.
We have invested in specific diagnostic software and training for these brands, and we use genuine or high-quality parts that meet manufacturer specifications.
Servicing basics: follow the book, then adjust for Dubai
Your owner’s manual sets the service intervals, and we recommend following them. But Dubai’s conditions are tougher than the test cycles most cars are designed around. Extreme heat, dust, stop-start traffic and long idling all put extra strain on components. If your driving fits that description, ask your garage whether to service on the shorter side of the range. Regular oil changes are especially important for turbocharged engines, which run hot and rely on clean oil. Our guide to turbocharged cars in the UAE explains why.
Five areas worth watching
1. Air conditioning and cooling
In Dubai, your AC is not a luxury, it is a safety and comfort system. Keep an eye out for weaker cooling, strange smells or fluctuating temperatures, and have the system checked before summer. The radiator and coolant system also need regular inspection. See our AC repair and maintenance and radiator maintenance services.
2. The 12V battery
Even in hybrids and EVs, a small 12V battery runs many of the car’s systems, and heat shortens its life. A weak battery can trigger confusing warning lights or electrical glitches that look like bigger problems. We explain more in our guide to car batteries in Dubai heat, and our battery service can test yours quickly.
3. Transmissions
Many modern Chinese models use CVT or dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. These work well when maintained but dislike neglect and heavy heat. Hesitation, jerking at low speed or delayed gear changes are signs to get the car checked early. Our transmission and gearbox repair team can diagnose these properly rather than guessing.
4. Electrics and sensors
With so many sensors, cameras and modules, intermittent electrical faults are a common frustration. A computer diagnostic scan can identify the source, whether it is a failing sensor, a software issue or a wiring problem, so you only pay for the repair you actually need.
5. Tyres, brakes and suspension
Heavier SUVs, particularly hybrids and plug-in hybrids carrying a battery pack, can wear tyres and brakes faster than you might expect. Check tyre condition regularly and book a wheel alignment if the car drifts or wears unevenly. Our tyre service can help you choose the right tyres for UAE roads.
What about hybrids and EVs?
Many of the newest models on Dubai roads from BYD, Chery and others are hybrid or fully electric. They need less routine engine maintenance but still require attention to the battery, cooling system, brakes, tyres and software. Our technicians are trained in EV battery health and thermal systems, which are critical in the UAE’s heat. For a deeper comparison, read electric vs petrol car maintenance in Dubai.
A word on warranty
If your car is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, read the terms carefully before deciding where to service it, and ask your garage to use parts that meet manufacturer specifications and to keep detailed service records. If you are unsure what your warranty requires, check with your dealer or the warranty provider first. Once the warranty period has ended, an independent specialist often offers the same technical quality with lower labour costs and faster turnaround.
